Become a Community Governor at Whitelands Park Primary School

Whitelands Park Primary School is seeking enthusiastic and community-minded individuals to join our Local Governing Body as Community Governors. Governors play a vital role in shaping the strategic direction of our school and ensuring the very best outcomes for all our pupils.

At Whitelands Park, our values of Growth and Kindness are at the heart of everything we do. We are committed to helping every child grow academically, socially and emotionally within a caring and supportive environment. As a Community Governor, you will help champion these values and ensure they remain central to our school’s vision and future development.

What does a Community Governor do?

As part of the school’s Local Governing Body, community governors work alongside parent, staff and co-opted governors to provide support, challenge and strategic leadership to the Headteacher and school leadership team.

Together, the Governing Body helps ensure that Whitelands Park continues to be a nurturing, ambitious and inclusive place where children are encouraged to grow in confidence and achievement, and where kindness underpins our relationships and decision-making.

Community governors focus on:

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction, rooted in our values of Growth and Kindness
  • Holding school leaders to account for the educational performance and personal development of pupils
  • Overseeing the school’s financial performance to ensure resources are used effectively to support every child’s growth and wellbeing.

Why become a Community Governor?

Being a governor is both rewarding and impactful. You will be making a real difference to the lives of children in your local community while helping to shape a school culture where kindness is valued and every child is supported to grow and succeed.

You will also have the opportunity for your own personal growth, gaining valuable skills in areas such as strategic planning, data analysis, leadership and teamwork.

Other benefits include:

  • Meeting new people and contributing to a committed and supportive team
  • Developing professional and transferable skills
  • Understanding how schools operate and influencing their future direction
  • Making a meaningful and lasting contribution to your community.

Who can apply?

There are no specific qualifications required to become a governor. We welcome individuals from all backgrounds and experiences who are willing to learn, offer their perspective and commit to the role.

Experience in areas such as governance, finance, education, HR, safeguarding or community engagement is helpful but not essential. What matters most is a commitment to supporting children’s growth and embodying the kindness that defines Whitelands Park Primary School.

Time commitment

This is a voluntary role, typically requiring around 6–10 days per year, including meetings, school visits and training.
