Phonics
We use the Read Write Inc. Phonics scheme at Whitelands Park in order to ensure that children learn to read accurately and fluently with good comprehension. They learn to form each letter, spell correctly, and compose their ideas step-by-step.
We understand how important it is for every child to develop a love of reading. Their future education and life chances are heavily impacted by the ability to read fluently. We are committed to teaching children the skills to read in school through personalised groupings which match each child’s reading stage. Every child will bring home a book which matches the phonics they are learning in school each week. These allow children to practise their increasing knowledge of phonics and ‘tricky’ words so that, early on, they experience plenty of success. Repeated readings of the texts support their increasingly fluent decoding.
We provide termly meetings for new parents to the school to provide guidance on how to support children’s reading at home.
